Kush & Orange Juice
Despite Wiz Khalifa's having dropped numerous mixtapes since 2005 and selling out shows all across the country, many slept on Wiz. That was until the funkdafied aroma emanating from his April breakout tape, Kush & Orange Juice, woke quite a few people from their slumber.
The formula for crafting last year's best mixtape is simple: a mix of melodic herb anthems, groupie-love story rhymes, and slick-pimp verbiage. "I don't love 'em, I don't chase 'em, I duck 'em/Smoke somethin', go to a new state soon as I fuck 'em," is how the Taylor Gang leader starts off the hazy sounding "Mezmorized," and he doesn't stray much from there. "The Kid Frankie," a two-stepper's dream that reworks Loose End's classic 1985 track "Hangin' on a String (Contemplating)," Thankfully follows suit. On it Khalifa spits, "Just another day in the life, 'nother plane, 'nother night/Gettin' faded with a nigga's wife"
Sonically, the tape doesn't dissapoint, either, as the varied soundtrack manages to find cohesion in the grand scheme of things. Songs like the funk-imfused "Spotlight" and the syrupy "Glass House," featuring rap cohorts Curren$y and Big K.R.I.T., balance perfectly with pop selections like "Wer'e Done," which samples its beat and hook from Disney teen queen Demi Lovato's 2008 song "Our Time Is Here." Also, credit Khalifa's penchant for employing catch hooks, like on "In Tha Cut" and the auto-Tuned "Petal to the Metal."
Kush & Orange Juice offers little topical variety beyond the haze, and that's okay. Wiz's half-baked stoner adventures remain entertaining from beginning to end, without getting too deep or killing the buzz. There are no real lows. It's like the rapper says on "Up," his slow, thumping weed ode: "Everything's better when you're high."
